"I am a Mother" Exhibition - Artwork reveal and reflections

Updated: May 27, 2023

In this blog post, I'll take you behind the scenes of my latest artwork, "Emotional Landscape," sharing my inspiration, creative process, and the emotions that drove its creation. Join me as I reflect on the profound impact this experience had on me and the connections I made along the way.

After last year's group exhibition at the 21 Century Borderless Art Exhibition: KIRABOSHI at National Art Centre Tokyo, I knew the time has come for me to evolve and find my artistic style in 2023.

The universe has it all planned when Mama on Palette, a non-profit community for mother artists, had an open call for its upcoming Mother's Day exhibition, this time to be held at a very meaningful location, Design Orchard. Design Orchard is an integrate retail and incubation space to support local designers. To be able to exhibit my artwork at this venue would signify support I would receive as a local visual artist.

This open call pushed me to put into action the exploratory and intuitive painting I have always envisioned myself doing. And I managed to complete "Emotional Landscapes" in a few sittings and fell in love with it.

Using just pastels, fingers and tracing paper, I created the shape of a wave organically and just let the artwork flow from my heart through my hands. Of course, a strong playlist to evoke a sense of creativity and flow helped a lot too.

There is so much beauty to discover in lines, waves and colours and I am so privileged to be able to explore my emotions through these in my art. And this creative process once again reminds me how much my artistic journey is parallel to my journey as a mother.

Title: Emotional Landscape (2023) by Caihui Lim | Medium: Pastel on Paper | Dimensions: 30cm x 30cm

I'm thrilled to announce that "Emotional Landscape" has been selected for the open call and is currently on display at Design Orchard from 11 May to 15 June 2023. This exhibition marks a significant milestone in my artistic journey, showcasing my first venture into intuitive painting.

The Creative Process:

Creating "Emotional Landscape" was a deeply personal and cathartic experience for me. I dedicated approximately 5-6 hours, spread across three sittings, to bring this artwork to life. Instead of following a strict plan or structure, I allowed my heart to guide my hand, embracing the freedom of intuitive painting. The use of pastels and my fingers as tools enabled me to establish a direct connection with the canvas, bringing my emotions to the forefront of the artwork.

Artwork Statement and Reflections:

"Emotional Landscape" is an exploration of the complex and intricate tapestry of human emotions. The interplay of lines and waves symbolises the ebb and flow of feelings within us, revealing the dynamic nature of our emotional landscape. As I immersed myself in the creation process, I found solace, release, and a connection with my inner self. Through this artwork, I aimed to evoke a sense of introspection and encourage viewers to explore their own emotional journeys.

One of the most fulfilling aspects of being an artist is the connections made with like-minded individuals who share the same passion. I had the pleasure of engaging in heartfelt conversations and exchanging experiences with fellow mama artists during the exhibition. These interactions with kindred spirits truly made my day, reminding me of the importance of a supportive community in our creative endeavors.
